The lipid profile is one of the key elements in determining cardiovascular risk. The commonly requested elements are total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol (also called "good cholesterol"), triglycerides, and sometimes LDL cholesterol (also known as "bad cholesterol").
The current European guidelines have clearly defined the targets / upper limits of LDL cholesterol levels for each level of cardiovascular risk, as assessed by the presence of vascular disease and the combination of various cardiovascular risk factors.
